THE CLARION ; INK VOICi OF BREVARD COLLSeE STUMNTS Tuesday, March 13,1979 Edition 10 PTK Heading For National Convention By Vanessa Davis “The Brilliant Future of Man. ” This national theme will carry freshman Donna Harriger and 20 other Brevard College students across the states to the national Phi Theta Kappa convention in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 8- 10, Donna will represent Brevard College as a candidate for the office of national president. When asked how she feels about the possibihty of her being the first woman elected since the 1930’s, Donna says, “I’m excited about the chance of my being elected both as president and as a woman president.” The Brevard College chapter feels that its about time to break this tradition and as winners of the presidency of the Carolina region they stand an excellent chance of doing just that. Campaigning for a national award along with Donna are Karen McCall for the John Clasby award and Misae Tanaka for the Zeta Theta Foreign Student award. Members of Brevard Colleges chapter. Delta Pi, are working hard on Donnaf’s campaign. They are attending sleep-ins and workshops in order, to make “tons” of posters, handouts, and favors. For the other chapters attending the convention, Delta Pi will set up a campaign headquarters and supply en tertainment for the advisors at the convention. Delta Pi is climbing mountain after mountain. Accordirtg to chapter president, Karen McCall, “The installation of provisional members this year has resulted in a more enthusiastic group.” The chapter has become involved with several other chapters throughout the state. The freshmen have many new op portunities open to them. Recently Delta Pi sponsored a 50’s dance and Disco Pat. They provided free refreshments and held contests for Brevard College students. Tempe White was the first place winner in the year 2000 dress contest. Accepting the second place award were Carter GoodJing and Todd Murphy. Students at Brevard College were surprised when a helicopter dropped in on the campus Wednesday. SGA Elections Set For Late March By Vanessa Davis Chamber Choir And Collegiate Singers Begin Tour Today By Scott Singletary The Brevard College Chamber Choir and Collegiate Singers will cover much of North Carolina when they go on a joint tour March 13-18. Under the professional guidance of conductor Lee Bratton, the groups are scheduled to perform in ^yetteville, Winston-Salem, reensboro, Oxford, Charlotte, and Durham. Michael Capps, president of amber Singers, says, “The our serves a two-fold pupose: to ®x^se the talents of Brevard ° lege students and to promote Merest in the college.” Accompanied by Cecilia Sutton ^ Joan Meadows, the two groups will perform sacred, spiritual, and secular music. The amber Choir will also perform a selection composed by Dr. G. 3rry Whatley, a professor of usic at Brevard College, en titled “Three Psalms.” The opportunity to be a member of the Collegiate Singers is available to anyone who is interested in participating in this fine musical group. The Chamber Choir, however, is chosen by auditions held at the beginnng of the school term. The officers for the Chamber Choir are Michael Capps, president/social, chairman, and Glenda Flinchum, treasurer/travel manager; The officers for the Collegiate Singers are William Rhinehart, social chairman, Ralphaela Baron, travel manager, and Cecilia Sutton, treasurer. The group has spent all year learning several challenging pieces in preparation for the tour. After these many hours of rehearsal, the group is looking for the tour to be a success. Elections to the Student Government Association are to be held the first week after spring break, pffices to be filled are SGA president, social board president, and vice-president of the judicial board. Thiese students must^ have a grade points average of 2.3 or better. Dorm presidents and vice- presidents are elected by the students residing in the dorm. These officers must maintain a 2.0 or better to hold these positions. The SGA president’s job is to unify the factions of students and faculties and assist in reaching compromises on controversial issues. The president is the major guide in the machine of student life at Brevard. He must set examples for the remainder of the student body and preside over SGA meetings with authority. Social Board president and an advisor work together planning and scheduling activities for the student body. He is supposed to see that each project is carried out properly and on time. The judicial Vice-president chairs the General Judicial Board. He listens to cases in volving violations of uniform guidelines where, if convicted, the penalty would not exceed judicial probation. ' Presidents of the dorms'must set examples for the students in their particular dorms and to the student body. He also serves on Clarion Essay Contest Feel a need to express yourself? Want to get recognition for your writing efforts? Would you like to win twenty dollars in an essay contest? If you answered yes to any of the above questions then THE CLARION has the answer for you. We are sponsoring an essay contest open to all students attending Brevard College. The subject of the essay is, “Why I chose a Junior College.” The rules are: 1) All entries must either be typewritten or neatly printed on one side of the paper only. 2) Entries should be limited to 500 words or less. 3) Please submit entries with a cover sheet with your name on that sheet only. 4) The essays should be submitted on or before Friday, March 30. 5) Essays should be submitted to Debi Crane, Box 144 or Mr. Chamblee. The winning essay will be printed in THE CLARION and the winner Vvill be recognized on Award’s Day. the Social board as a senator of the legislative body. Vice-presidents serve on the Judicial Board. They must be prepared to take the president’s place in their absence. Two freshman respresen- tatives will be elected in the fall. All members meet together to form the student government association. They should show enthusiasm and represent the students to the best of their ability. If you qualify, sigri up with Dean Houk. All candidates will make speeches after spring break. The date is March 16, so hurry. Christian Encounter Week In Progress \ Brevard College is already well into Christian Encounter Week. This week is sponsored by the Thomas F. Staley Foundation. The main concern of this week is to further the evangelical witness of the Christian church, with a ' special concern for students on the college level. This week the special guest-at Brevard College is Dr. David G. Hortin, who is now the pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, Florida. Mr. Hortin will be the Culture , and Life Speaker Wednesday morning at 10:00 in Dunham.
